Analysis of The Adding Machine By/ Elmer Rice
Elmer Rice was an American playright and novelist . He was born in Newyork in 1892 and died in 1967 . His writings were innovative in style ; he cared about the individual freedom confronted by the tyrany of impersonal institutions .He contributed in the American theaterical community with his expressionistic dramatic techniques , such as the flashback technique in his play " On Trial" .
Elmer Rice was often called a reformer , his writing styles included Melodrama , Expressionism , Naturalism , and Relatively violent propaganda plays .
Elmer Rice wrote " The Adding Machine " in 1923 , it was an expressionistic tragic- comic drama about a bookkeeper , Mr Zero , who is driven to murder his employer when he is replaced by an adding machine . In " The Adding Machine " Elmer Rice aimed at showing the impact of widespread Materialism in the world , he lamented the world in which people are to be deemed as mere numbers . Elmer Rice`s opinion is that " a man is to be appreciated according his faithfulness , sincerity , and loyality , not according his wealth -- A shoe stills a shoe even if you fill it with money .

The expressionistic play has a rapid acting accompanied with music and sound , also it is full of theaterical devices such as masks , strange clothes , and unusual lights in order to create a high level of imagination for the part of audience
