*Every story would be another story and unrecognizable if we took up its characters and plot and happened somewhere else.
كل قصة تصبح قصة أخرى إذا أخذنا الأحداث والشخصيات وجعلناها تحدث في مكان آخر

*Fiction depends for its life on place. Place is the crossroads of circumstance.
الخيال يعتمد على المكان والمكان عبارة عن مفترق طريق لظرف ما




What is the setting of the short story ?

ما هو إعداد القصة؟

*is the time and place of action.
مكان وزمان الأحداث

*the background against which events happen.
عبارة عن خلفية تحدث فيها الأحداث

*takes on a central role in the story; it makes things happen.
لها دور هام ومحوري في القصة وتجعل الأشياء تحدث

*it can force characters to act.
تدفع الشخصيات للتمثيل والتصرف

This mean the setting not only tells us where a story is taking place and what is going on at the time (the circumstances) but also can set the tone or the mood of a story.
وهذا يعني بان الإعداد لا يخبرنا فقط عن أي موقع أخذت القصة وما يحث خلال الزمن( الظروف) ولكن أيضا  تقوم بعمل نغمة خاصة واتجاه معين للقصة



How is the setting created?

كيف يتم الإعداد؟

*Setting is created through language.
ينشأ الإعداد من خلال اللغة

* detailed description provided by the text, and the kind of language used in the description.
وصف مفصل من خلال النص وأنواع اللغة المستخدمة في الوصف

*not only tells the reader where and when a story taking a place , but also how a story is taking a place.
لا تخبر القارئ متى وأين حدثت أخذت القصة موضعها ولكن أيضا كيف تأخذه



Some writers:

بعض الكتاب:

1-provide many often realistic(resembling)details about the setting of the story.
غالبا التزود بتفاصيل واقعية في إعداد القصة

2-provide many details but ones which are less 'realistic' and more 'impressionistic' (based on one's mood feeling or senses rather than some thing real)
التزود بالكثير من التفاصيل ولكنها اقل واقعية و انطباعية أكثر أي تستند إلى شعور مزاجي  أو حواس أكثر من شيء واقعي آخر)




Irony:

أسلوب مفارقة أو سخرية

(Situation does not seem right or balanced)
حالات لا تبدو صحيحة أو متوازنة

* is a technique used to emphasis a gap between reality and appearance .
أسلوب يستخدم لتأكيد وجود فجوة بين الواقع والمظهر

They may also be a bit of snobbery(thinking one is better than other people)
قد يكون قليل من غرور وخيلاء ( التفكير بان احدهم أفضل من الآخرين)



Symbolism

الرمز


Describes the use of a concrete object to represent a concept or idea .
وصف استخدام شيء ملموس لتمثيل فكرة أو مفهوم

Naturalism

الطبيعية

* does not mean that the story has to take place in nature *
لا تعني أن القصة أخذت موقعا ما في الطبيعة

- is a literary and philosophical approach that argues that there is a logical or practical explanation for every thing.
فرع أدبي وفلسفي يقول بان هنالك تفسير عملي أو منطقي لكل شيء

It is a kind of realism (writing which tries to represent reality or life as it is)
هو نوع من الواقعية (كتابة تحاول تمثيل الواقع أو الحياة كما هي)

How could we explain a human behavior according to naturalism ?
كيف نستطيع تفسير سلوك الإنسان طبقا للطبيعية؟

By looking at , biological or hereditary traits, instinct, environment and sometimes chance.
من خلال البحث في المنطق أو السمات الوراثية أو البيئة أو الغريزة أو أحيانا الفرصة

*in naturalism literature , the environment seems to be treating the character in an unfeeling way.

He calls old-timers womanish because they think that people should not travel alone in very cold weather . he believes this way of thinking is not brave.

-The setting is very clear from the beginning . it is daytime on a very cold day , it is 75 degree Fahrenheit below zero and it is nine o'clock in the morning, it is clear day not a cloud in the sky (these are realistic details)
We are introduced to the idea of death , the atmospheric description of setting focuses on the idea of death with words such as pall, gloom and dark. there is death in the air and all of this created by the details of setting.
الإعداد واضح جدا في البداية فهو نهار يوم بارد جدا ودرجة الحرارة 75 درجة فهرنهايت تحت الصفر وهي الساعة التاسعة في الصباح كان يوم صحو بلا غيوم في السماء (تفاصيل واقعية) تدخلنا في فكرة الموت , الجو الموصوف ركز على فكرة الموت من خلال كلمات مثل
شحوب كآبة ظلام . هنالك موت في الهواء وكل هذا يصنع تفاصيل الإعداد

-the weather play a central role in this story . the man is unable to eat or to build a fire due the extreme cold. The weather seems to be in control , forcing the man to act the extreme cold, snow, ice and frost move the plot forward. In fact, the weather can be considered as one of the " character " on this story, possibly even an antagonist or enemy against which this man must struggle for his survival.
الطقس لعب دوار محوريا في هذه القصة الرجل غير قادر على تناول الطعام أو إشعال نار أثناء البرد القارص  وعلى ما يبدو فان الطقس كان مسيطرا ويدفع الرجل للتصرف  البرد الشديد الثلج و الصقيع حركت الإحداث باتجاه واحد . في الواقع يمكن اعتبار الطقس احد الشخصيات في القصة  وربما الخصم أو العدو إلي على الرجل مكافحته للبقاء

Why do you think there are so man mentions of temperatures ?
لماذا باعتقادك هنالك ذكر كبير لدرجة الحرارة من قبل الرجل؟

- the temperature is repeatedly mentioned because it is the most important factor which would affect the man's survival. His live depends on how cold it is. If he should get wet, he would definitely freeze in this weather. He is unable to perform the simplest of acts.
ذكرت درجة الحرارة بشكل ملحوظ لأنها العامل الرئيسي المؤثر على بقاء الرجل حيا. حياته تعتمد على إلى أي حد هي باردة  إذا حصل وتبلل هو بالتأكيد سيتجمد في هذا الطقس . هو غير قادر على عمل ابسط الأعمال.

The narrator tell us" but all this__ the mysterious, far-reaching hairline trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all __ made no impression on the man"

- the reader can conclude that this man is not very intelligent. Nothing seemed to make an impression on him. He knew it was very cold   (the thing) , but what that meant (the significance) was some thing he could not understand.
يمكن للقارئ أن يستنتج من خلال ذلك أن الرجل ليس ذكيا جدا.  يبدو أن لا شيء ترك انطباعا فيه واثر به  كان يعلم أن الجو بارد جدا ولكن ذلك يعني انه لم يفهم ذلك ويعيه

The man thinks that the tree is "treacherous:__ what does this mean? Is the tree really treacherous in your opinion ? why or why not?

The man thinks that the tree is
"treacherous" shows how important the setting in this story. He even feels that is acting against him; it is somehow betraying him in a cruel and unfeeling way. Its his mistake to travel alone on cold weather and to build a fire under tree full of snow.
اعتقاد الرجل بان الشجرة غادرة يدل على أهمية الإعداد في هذه القصة كان يشعر بان ذلك كان ضده والى حد ما هي خيانة متوحشة وعديمة الإحساس. هي غلطته  في السفر وحيدا في طقس بارد وإشعال نار أسفل شجرة مليئة بالثلج.

How would this story be different if it had taken place in a forest in Lebanon or morocco in June? The Sahara desert in August?
كيف يمكن أن تكون هذه القصة مختلفة لو كانت اتخذت مكانا في غابة في لبنان أو المغرب في حزيران / يونيو؟ الصحراء في آب / أغسطس؟

- if this story had taken place in a forest on Lebanon or Morocco on June, it would not to be the same story. Nothing at all would be the same. Setting in this story seems to be every thing.
- إذا القصة حدثت في إحدى الغابات في لبنان أو المغرب في حزيران / يونيو ، فإنها لن تكون القصة ذاتها . لا شيء على الإطلاق سيكونكما هو . الإعداد في هذه القصة هو كل شيء.


What role does setting play in the plot or events of this story?

-Setting seems to have a central role in this story. The man can be seen as a protagonist or main character and the weather or nature can be viewed as the antagonist or enemy against which the man must struggle. The action of the protagonist and antagonist make up the plot or events of this story
الإعداد له دور مركزي في هذه القصة . الرجل يبدو بطل أو شخصية رئيسية في القصة والطقس أو الطبيعة هي الخصم أو يمكن أن ترى كخصم أو عدو  على الرجل مكافحته. أحداث البطل والخصم تصنع حبكة أحداث هذه القصة.
Why do you think the man is not given a name in the story?
لماذا باعتقادك لم يعطى الرجل اسما في القصة؟

- the fact that the man is not given name seems to emphasis the struggle between man and nature , this has effect of drawing attention to the role of nature, that is, as an actor, mover, shaper of events. Giving the man name would focus our attention on him and help us to see him more personally.
لم يعطى الرجل اسما للتركيز على الصراع بين الرجل والطبيعة وهذا للفت الانتباه إلى تأثير الطبيعة كعنصر فاعل محرك مشكل للأحداث. إعطاء الرجل اسما سيركز انتباهنا على تقديم المساعدة له لرؤيته بشخصه أكثر

-Animals that marked with red paint are ready to be hunted. These are animals that would have naturally died within two minutes of being hunted. thus no change in the link would have taken place any way. These are animals with no future.
- الحيوانات التي رسم عليها بالدهان الأحمر على استعداد لان تكون في المصيدة. هذه هي الحيوانات التي من شأنها أن تموت  بشكل طبيعي في غضون دقيقتين من اصطيادها. وبالتالي لا تغيير في الرابط المأخوذ في مكان بأي طريقة  هذه الحيوانات ليس لها مستقبل.

- the main part of the story takes place in the past __that is sixty million two thousand and fifty years in the past. However, this past is framed by the present at the beginning of the story and then a different kind of present at the end of the story. The difference between the two "present" really has to do with what happen in the past, where most of this story takes place. The setting of this story especially in terms of time, plays a crucial element in the story. In fact it is the base upon which the events of the story are built.
الجزء الرئيسي للقصة اخذ مكانا في الماضي  وذلك في 60 مليون وألفين وخمسين سنة في الماضي. وهذا الماضي يحكمه الحاضر في بداية القصة وحاضر آخر في نهاية القصة  الاختلاف في الحاضرين كان لما حدث حقا في الماضي حيث اغلب مكان حدثت فيه القصة.
الإعداد في هذه القصة خصوصا في مصطلحات الزمن لعبت عنصرا حاسما في القصة . في الحقيقة يعتمد على ما هي الأحداث في بناء القصة.

Describe the setting in the present at the beginning of the story and the end of the story. What is the difference between these two settings? How is the difference in setting important to the meaning of the story?
صف الإعداد في الحاضر في بداية القصة ونهاية القصة. ما هو الفرق بين هذين الإعدادين ؟ كيف يتم تحديد الفرق في أهمية الإعداد  لمعنى القصة؟

At the beginning of the story, we learn that the moderate Keith has just become the president of the united states. How ever, at the end of the story the dictatorial Deutscher is the new President. This suggests that the world had developed differently, more radically it seems as a result of Eckels stepping on a butterfly in the past. Other things it seems were also affected __the air had changed; language had developed differently. All of this had to do with something being done differently, even if ever so slightly, in the past. The writer very cleverly relies on details of setting(past and present) in order to highlight the meaning of the story which is how the smallest actions can have a tremendous effect on great events.
في بداية القصة نرى أن كيث  الديمقراطي سيصبح رئيسا للولايات الأمريكية
في النهاية نرى أن  الديكتاتوري ديتشر  هو الرئيس الجديد وهذا يشير إلى أن العالم تطور بشكل مختلف نتيجة لدهس الايكال لفراشة في الماضي . أشياء أخرى تأثرت أيضا الهواء تغير واللغة تطورت بشكل مختلف. كل هذا جعل الأشياء تحدث بشكل مختلف حتى لو كانت بسيطة في وقت مضى. الكاتب ذكي جدا اعتمد على تفاصيل الإعداد(ماضي وحاضر) من اجل تسليط الضوء على معنى القصة الذي هو أن أفعال صغيرة  ممكن أن يكون لها اثر هائل بأحداث كبيرة

The setting in this story is of the utmost importance. Every thing in this story depends on time and how past, present and future are inked.
الإعداد في هذه القصة هو في غاية الأهمية. كل شيء في هذه القصة يعتمد على الوقت وكيف الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل حدثوا.

Which do you think more important in this story: time or place?

Both time anyplace important in this story; but we would probably say that time is more important element here. What would happen if instead of taking place in the united states, this story took place in a different country _ nothing much in terms of the structure of this story. However, if we change the time element, then the structure of the story would change. We would not have the same story at all.
كلا من الوقت و المكان مهمان في هذه القصة ، ولكننا ربما نقول أن الوقت هو العنصر الأكثر أهمية هنا. ما الذي كان سيحدث لو بدلا من أن تجري الأحداث في الولايات المتحدة ، ووقعت  في بلد آخر _ لن يتغير الكثير من بنية القصة. ومع ذلك ، إذا قمنا بتغيير عنصر الوقت فان هذا  من شأنه تغيير القصة. لن نحصل على القصة ذاتها على الإطلاق.

Science fiction

A kind of writing in which events are in the future, but they are based on our current stage of science and technology. Thus events depicted in science fiction could actually take in the future.
نوع من الكتابة تكون فيه الأحداث في المستقبل ، ولكنها تستند إلى مرحلتنا الحالية للعلوم والتكنولوجيا. هذه الأحداث تصور في روايات الخيال العلمي يمكن لها بالفعل أن تؤخذ  في المستقبل.
